It is the 60th anniversary of the first skyscraper in Río Cuarto
On January 17, 1953, the Grand Hotel Río Cuarto was inaugurated. With six floors and 60 rooms, it was the first high-rise building in the local environment. The story of a symbol of urban architecture.
In stark contrast to the present, in the late 1940s only a few buildings exceeded three stories. They drew attention for their size and style, the Post Office in front of the main square, Courts, or the imposing Municipal Palace, all of a public nature. Faced with this reality, the construction of the Grand Hotel Río Cuarto revolutionized the building forms of the time, starting with its steep six floors, becoming ?the first skyscraper in the city?, the same one that has just completed -in silence- sixty years since its splendid inauguration.
It was on Saturday January 17, 1953 when the daring real estate venture became one of the ?postcards? favorites of the riocuartenses to make known ?the Empire? from a distance. From the columns of the newspaper ?El Pueblo? it was predicted: ?An extraordinary social event will be the inauguration of the Grand Hotel Río Cuarto.? And indeed, it was. Not only because of the protocols, but also because the city needed a "first class" hotel. and, above all, a trigger for building growth. Although there were other hotels, and with a long tradition in the field, most conformed to old dictates, of attention and construction.
It was in May 1950 when the project of the prosperous Don Antonio Marich was publicly known, which required an investment of more than two million pesos; the plans were entrusted to the architects Cima and Azpilicueta, while the construction was entrusted to the Cordovan company Ravazzola & Campisi. The prestige of the professionals guaranteed the seriousness of the undertaking.
